STRENGTH TRAINING & NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, cost the Malaysian economy upwards of RM8.91 billion, equivalent to about 0.65 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. The Malaysian government has taken on this challenge by implementing the National Strategic Plan for Non - Communicable Disease 2016 - 2025 as well as associated national strategies and plans aimed at reducing risk factors for NCDs.

Research has shown that endurance exercise promotes the production of an antioxidant called extracellular superoxide dismutase (EcSOD) that breaks down the free radical superoxide outside of the cells. Studies have provided proof-of-principle evidence that delivery of the EcSOD gene or protein to elevate the amount of EcSOD in the blood and vital organs may be an effective intervention for protection of the lungs and other vital organs against damages caused by ARDS and multiple organ failure.
